Getting Started

How do I write a brief so the names come back great?

Say what your business does, who it serves and how it should feel. The more specific the brief, the better the names.

The brief is the biggest lever you have. A vague brief gets vague names. Say plainly what your business does, who it is for, the personality you want, and anything to avoid.

  1. Write one sentence on what your business does, who it serves and the problem it solves.
  2. Add your audience: age, place, industry or culture all help.
  3. Pick a tone, like professional, playful, bold or trustworthy, or describe your own.
  4. Say which styles you like: invented words, real words, compound words, or a mix.
  5. List hard limits: length, words to include or avoid, extensions you need, languages.
  6. Name 2 or 3 competitors or names you like, so your results stand apart from them.
  7. Read it over and send it.
