What comes working in a business directory app?

A guide to town, kept up for you.

The parts a directory needs to fill up and stay current come working in the first version, under your name.

  • ✓ Comes working01

    Businesses list themselves

A shop fills in its name, category, town, hours, phone and website and adds photos. You don’t type in a single listing.

  • ✓ Comes working02

    Nothing goes up unseen

New listings wait in your Admin. One button approves; another hides a listing that closed or broke your rules.

  • ✓ Comes working03

    Search by category and town

Visitors filter for bakeries in one town or plumbers in the next, and sort by name or newest.

  • ✓ Comes working04

    Owners keep their listing current

A business signs in to change its hours or photos, and it can only ever edit its own listing.

  • ✓ Comes working05

    Featured spots, paid monthly

A business subscribes at the monthly price you set, into your own Stripe. You switch its featured badge on from your Admin, and it sits at the top.

  • ✓ Comes working06

An email for every new listing

You hear about each submission as it lands, and the business gets a confirmation back.

  • ✓ Comes working07

    Your counts in Admin

Listings by category, by town and by status, so you can see which categories still need filling.

What visitors search, and what you approve.

Visitors filter by category and town and land on a listing with the business’s own phone and website. You approve submissions and switch featured spots on in your Admin.

How does a local directory make money?

Free to list, paid to stand out.

Most directories that last are free to join and charge for attention. Every business in town gets a listing at no cost, which is what makes the directory worth searching. The ones that want to be seen first pay a monthly fee for a featured spot.

That fee is a subscription in your own Stripe at the price you set, so it renews by itself each month. When a business stops paying, you switch its badge off.

  • Free listings fill itA full directory is the reason visitors come back.
  • Featured paysA handful of monthly spots turns the guide into income.
  • Local is the edgeA guide to one town knows things the big sites don’t.

How do you fill a new directory fast?

Seed one street, then the town.

Start with one category or one main street and walk it: ask each shop to add itself. A directory with every coffee shop in one town beats one with a few of everything, and the businesses you list first are the ones who share it with their customers.

What it won’t do

No map view of listings, and it doesn’t pull listings in from other sites.

Questions

Directories,
answered.

Can businesses edit their own listing?Yes
Yes. A business signs in and changes its hours, photos, phone and website. It can only ever edit its own listing, and you can still hide any listing from your Admin.
How do featured listings get paid?Monthly, into your Stripe
A business subscribes at the monthly price you set, and the money goes into your own Stripe. You switch its featured badge on in your Admin. To end a featured spot, you cancel the subscription in your Stripe and switch the badge off; there’s no cancel button for the business inside the app.
Can visitors message a business through the directory? They call or click
Each listing shows the business’s own phone number and website, so visitors reach them directly. The directory doesn’t pass messages along, and it doesn’t show listings on a map.
Can I charge businesses just to be listed?Yes
Yes. Make the listing itself a monthly subscription at one price you set, and only paying businesses can submit. Most new directories fill faster free, with featured spots as the paid part.
