Paid communities

Your people, behind your door.

Members pay monthly or yearly into your own Stripe and get in. The posts and the directory sit behind the members’ sign-in, and only paying members can post on the board.

It starts from“A paid membership community where people join on a monthly or yearly plan, members-only posts behind the sign-in, a members’ board where paying members post and reply, a member directory they can choose to join, a button in my admin to hide any post, and an email to me when someone joins.”

What comes working in a paid membership community?

The door, the room, and the list.

A community needs a way in, a reason to stay and someone keeping the peace. The first version has all three, under your community’s name.

  • ✓ Comes working01

    Monthly or yearly plans

Two plans at the prices you set, billed by your own Stripe. When a membership ends, posting ends with it, without you lifting a finger.

  • ✓ Comes working02

    Posts behind the sign-in

Your guides, links and announcements sit behind the members’ sign-in. A visitor sees the join page, not the posts.

  • ✓ Comes working03

    A members’ board

Members start a thread and reply to each other. Posts are saved and listed newest first, and posting checks for an active membership every time.

  • ✓ Comes working04

    A directory members opt into

Members add a short profile if they want to be found, then search by what people do or where they are. Only members can browse it.

  • ✓ Comes working05

    Hide what doesn’t belong

One button in your Admin hides a post that breaks your rules, and the same button brings it back.

  • ✓ Comes working06

    Sign-in that just works

Login links by email, password reset, and an account page for every member.

  • ✓ Comes working07

    An email when someone joins

You hear about every new member, and your Admin lists who joined this month and whose membership is still active.

See it working

What a member sees, and what you see.

A visitor sees what’s inside and the two plans. You get the member count, new joins and every post you hid, in your Admin.

How does a paid community make money?

Renewals beat launches.

A community lives on renewals. A member who pays every month is worth more than a launch that sells once, and a yearly plan pays you for the whole year up front.

What keeps people paying is what they can’t get outside: the posts you write, the people in the directory, the threads on the board. Keep those behind the door and leave the join page open for anyone to read.

  • A yearly planMoney up front, and fewer members drifting off each month.
  • The directoryMembers stay for each other, not only for you.
  • Your own StripeRenewals land in your account, and our fee is 1% or less.

What should a new community put behind the door first?

Start small, post weekly.

Start with one thing members get every week, like a guide, a link to a recording or a question thread, plus the directory. A small community with a steady rhythm keeps more members than a big library nobody opens.

What it won’t do

No live chat or video calls, it doesn’t email every member at once, and members can’t cancel inside the app (you cancel from Stripe).

Questions

Paid communities,
answered.

Can a visitor read the members-only posts?No
No. Members-only posts are only sent to signed-in members, so a visitor can’t read them by peeking at the page. Paying members see them on the members’ page, and the board checks for an active membership on every post and reply.
Can members talk to each other in real time? No, it’s a board
No. There’s no instant chat and no video calls. Members post and reply on a board, saved and listed like a forum, so a good thread is still there next week.
How does a member cancel? You cancel in Stripe
Members ask you, and you cancel from your Stripe dashboard. Access ends when the membership does. A cancel button inside the app isn’t built yet.
Can I send all my members an update? Not by email
Not from the app: it emails you, and it emails a member about their own account, but it doesn’t send one message to every member. Post the update on the members’ page instead, where every member sees it when they sign in.

Open the door, keep the members.
